Veterinary Spinal Manipulation
Veterinary Spinal Manipulation Therapy (VSMT) is a gentle, hands-on therapy used to help restore normal motion to the spine and joints. Small restrictions can develop in the spine or joints; often from injury, repetitive strain, compensation patterns, or everyday wear and tear. Over time, they can affect comfort, mobility, and overall performance. Through precise, controlled adjustments, VSMT helps improve joint mobility, reduce pain, support neurologic function, and enhance your pet’s ability to move comfortably.
This therapy is commonly used for pets experiencing back or neck pain, stiffness, decreased performance, or subtle changes in posture and gait. It can also be a valuable part of a comprehensive rehabilitation plan following injury or surgery, and for active or sporting dogs who place higher demands on their bodies.
When performed by a veterinarian trained in spinal manipulation, VSMT is safe, well-tolerated, and tailored to your pet’s individual needs—helping them move better, feel better, and return to doing what they love.
Common VSMT Questions
-
When applied correctly, VSMT is very gentle (despite what you may see on social media). Animals may feel immediate relief after being adjusted.
-
VSMT can be used to address stiffness, changes in posture, or issues that arise from compensatory patterns or chronic overuse.
-
Any pet current suffering from an acute episode of IVDD, or if there is concern for a fracture or cancer, is not a good candidate for VSMT.
-
VSMT can only be administered by veterinarians who have completed certification in a post-graduate VSMT program, which includes rigorous hands-on training.
