Joint Injections

Joint health is a significant concern for many dog owners, especially those with aging pets or breeds prone to joint issues. Joint injections have become a popular and effective treatment option for managing arthritis and other joint-related conditions in dogs.

Understanding Joint Injections

Joint injections involve administering medication directly into the joint space to reduce inflammation, provide pain relief, and improve mobility. These treatments can be a crucial part of managing conditions like osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia in dogs.

Common Joint Injection Questions

  • Any joint in the forelimb or hindlimb can be injected, including the digits! However the most common joints are the stifles (knees), elbows, hips, and shoulders.

  • Joint injections can effectively treat pain and inflammation due to arthritis, instability or dysplasia directly in the affected area, which can potentially reduce the need for other medications, and allow for improved mobility overall.

  • At Resurgence Veterinary Mobility, we are currently using hyaluronic acid, corticosteroids, and Spryng for joint injections.

  • 1. Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are potent anti-inflammatory drugs that can provide rapid relief from joint pain and inflammation. We will generally pair a steroid with either hyaluronic acid or Spryng.

Efficacy: Corticosteroids can offer significant relief, especially in acute flare-ups of arthritis. However, they are not a long-term solution by themselves.

Duration of Results: Relief typically lasts from a few weeks to a few months, depending on the severity of the condition.

    2. Hyaluronic Acid (HA)

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of joint fluid that helps lubricate and cushion the joint. HA injections aim to restore the joint fluid’s viscosity, reducing pain and improving mobility.

Efficacy: HA injections can be effective in reducing pain and improving joint function, especially in early stages of arthritis.

Duration of Results: Benefits can last from several weeks to a few months, with repeated treatments often necessary for sustained results.

    3. Spryng™

Spryng™ is a newer injectable veterinary device made of microparticles designed to mimic the extracellular matrix of cartilage, providing cushioning and shock absorption in the joint.

Efficacy: Spryng™ can significantly improve joint function and reduce pain by mimicking natural cartilage. It is particularly beneficial for dogs with moderate to severe arthritis.

Duration of Results: Relief can last from six months to over a year, depending on the severity of the condition and the dog's activity level.

  • With any injection there is a risk of infection, which is reduced by a sterile preparation of the area prior to injection. Additionally, a small number of patients could experience some transient pain and swelling for a few days after injection.

  • The injections are performed under injectable sedation and pets are monitored continuously throughout the procedure. The sedation is typically reversed at the end of the procedure and they are able to go home shortly thereafter.

  • The appointment length for joint injections is generally around an hour, with the sedation portion lasting around 15-20 minutes.

  • Coverage can vary among pet insurance providers and policies. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider to determine if joint injections are included in your policy and if any specific requirements or documentation are necessary.
