Spring Updates from RVM!

As spring is in full swing, we wanted to take a moment to update you on some exciting happenings at our veterinary rehabilitation practice.

Resurgence Veterinary Mobility was established in late 2022 when Dr. Cara McNamee converted her mobile rehab practice to a stand-alone facility in Decatur in an effort to make rehab more accessible to our community’s dogs and cats. We worked out of a temporary space until our building opened for business on January 3rd, 2023. We’ve received some exposure from the following publications:

Here are a couple of rewarding case studies from the past few months.

Nero

Nero, a 9 month old male Doberman, came to us in early March.

His neck was very painful, and he was hunched in his back. He cried out when he had to move his head and couldn’t get up when laying down. His parents were very concerned about him and wanted him to get back to his playful puppy self.

At his first visit Dr. McNamee was able to locate the source of his pain and then design a therapy program targeted for his specific concerns. She started with acupuncture and therapeutic laser treatments as well as recommending some medications and supplements for him.

Nero came in weekly for 5 weeks. He worked on building strength and flexibility in his neck with therapeutic exercise and underwater treadmill sessions. At every visit he was increasingly playful, and his joyful personality came out as the pain went away. His parents also worked hard at home with his home exercise program.  After 5 weeks he was able to graduate and go on to live a pain-free life and play unrestrictedly with his sibling! As sad as we are to see him go, we are so proud of his progress!

Rita

Rita is a 12.5 year old boxer/pitbull mix that has been coming to see us since the end of January.

Her owner’s primary concern on her initial evaluation was progressive hind end weakness that started about a month prior. Her parents were noticing her back legs slip out from under her, knuckle (step on the top of her toes), stumble more, and scuff her back paws when they would go on walks.

At Rita’s first visit with us, she was moderately ataxic (wobbly) in her hind legs, sunken with reduced strength, and her proprioception (body awareness) was severely delayed on the right hind and totally absent on the left hind.

Rita has been working very hard with us one time per week for the last 3 months. Her exercises have been specifically tailored to her deficits and weaknesses. They have consisted of improving neurological awareness to her hind legs, strength in her hind legs and core, improving her comfort and range of motion, and decreasing her need for compensatory movements to walk with adequate control. We can proudly say that she now walks with no wobble in her steps, her awareness to her back legs has improved dramatically to just about normal and she is now able to enjoy a leisure walk with her parents with no nail scuffing or hind leg dragging.

We are thrilled with Rita’s progress and are so happy that she’s able to now enjoy walks and move around with more ease and freedom at home.
